In 1985, Hewlett-Packard established a chemistries and supplies business to support its analytical instruments. In its first year, the business delivered sales of $11 million. Today, Agilent’s Chemistries & Supplies Division ships nearly $11 million of consumables every week. Annual revenues are approaching half a billion dollars as the division marks its 30th year.
This is a remarkable achievement, considering that the average consumables order is for $1,000. CSD produces almost 19,000 different products at five manufacturing sites, and ships 27,000 orders a month through four logistics warehouses around the world. Products include high-quality columns that separate substances for analysis by gas and liquid chromatographs. Customers typically need and expect delivery within 24-48 hours of placing an order.
Particles used in the manufacture of Agilent Poroshell Columns are less than 2 microns in size. (For comparison, a human red blood cell is 5 microns wide. A human hair is 75 microns thick.) CSD manipulates the pore size, bonds a wide range of chemistries to the particles, and scales them to volume… all while ensuring batch-to-batch reproducibility. This is very sophisticated science!
“It takes a village of very dedicated people to achieve our business results every month,” says Agilent’s Helen Stimson. “We have come a long way since 1985, and have a great deal to be proud of as a team. We are continuing to improve and evolve, and we look forward to contributing to the success of the new Agilent.”
