Agilent Scores a Key Role at the 2014 FIFA World Cup

The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off today in Brazil.  National teams from 32 countries will participate in 64 matches in 12 cities across Brazil.  With today’s climate of terrorism and political unrest, safety will be a primary concern for the host country.

Agilent solutions are being used to help keep spectators and teams safe.  A special division of the Brazilian Army is tasked with providing chemical, biological and nuclear defense.  The forces and scientists have no idea what they may encounter and must be prepared for anything.  “It’s kind of like searching for a needle in a haystack,” says Brazil’s Lt. Col. Paulo Malizia.  “We need to search difference substances, different sizes, different masses.”

A major challenge is to take the analytical capabilities that are normally found in a laboratory and make them available in the field.  “We need to provide answers for all people,” says Lt. Col. Malizia.  “For health, for security.  We can’t release these answers two days or three days after.  We need to give you the right answer in a very fast time.”

Agilent is providing sample preparation and analytical capabilities for the laboratory as well as a mobile crime lab.  The Agilent 5975T GC/MSD mobile gas chromatograph, less than two-thirds the size of a standard lab instrument, is the ideal solution for on-site analysis of explosives, fire residue and blood.

Other Agilent equipment includes the 4500a FTIR Forensics Analyzer, the 4300 Handheld FTIR, GC/MS, LC/MS and Atomic Spectroscopy technologies.
